About Lars Asplin

I am working on physical processes in fjords and the carrying capacity of
the ecosystem especially in terms of aquaculture. Important for this is
the variability of currents for dispersion of pathogenes, pollution and
water quality properties, and the variability of temperature for
determination of biological growth. It is necessary to understand the
variability of todays climate in order to evaluate the influence of a
future climate change. I use both coupled physical-biological numerical
models and collect field data in my work.

I have research experience in applying satellite data for  precipitation (seasonal and diurnal variations of precipitation) study. I also have experience in weather and climate modeling,  climate data and analyses in Asia.
I am involved in the model output validation over the tropical maritime continent. My recent focus is on the regional climate modeling, climate change scenarios over the South Asian region.

My postdoc position is linked to the ProVoLo project which aims at better understanding (sub)mesoscale variability and energy dissipation in the Lofoten Basin from in situ measurements collected by underwater gliders (http://naco2.gfi.uib.no/), moorings, RAFOS floats, drifters and R/Vs (CTD and microstructure).

About Ragna Breines

I completed my Master of Technology (Sivilingeniør) in biotechnology at University of Tromsø in 2015. I then completed my PhD in molecular biology with the thesis title: ”Gadidae mitogenomics: Molecular characterization and phylogenybased on complete mtDNA sequences” in May 2011. My main research topics are mitochondrial genomes from fish, population studies and mitochondrial transcritome studies.

Currently I work as administrative manager for the Norwegian Research School in Climate Dynamics, ResClim and the Norwegian Research School – Changing climate in a coupled earth system, CHESS. The researcher background is beneficial when working on larger projects where you are in close contact with both scientific and administrative staff.

About Carina Bringedal

My research focuses on how the atmosphere, in particular wind forcing, can affect the thermohaline circulation in the North Atlantic. The thermohaline circulation contributes in bringing warm, saline waters northwards and is driven by density differences in the ocean: Warm waters are less dense, but is cooled when transported far north, hence becoming denser. Denser waters sink and flow southwards in the deep ocean. On a monthly/yearly basis large variations in the intensity of this circulation can be seen, also in the deep ocean. Parts of these variations can be caused by the wind, and I aim to find out how. For more info, see here. I am a part of the NFR-project NORTH.

I previously worked with heat transport in the ground, motivated by production of geothermal energy. My focus was on how density currents in the groundwater can affect the heat production. As one creates a temperature difference in the ground by taking up heat energy, this will create density differences in the groundwater, which then can initiate a density driven current: colder groundwater is heavier and flow downwards, while warmer groundwater is less dense and flow upwards. TU wrote an article about this (in Norwegian). I have also looked at how geochemical reactions caused by the temperature change in the subsurface can affect the heat reservoir, and developed better models to describe these changes.

About Alberto Carrassi

Alberto’s main research interest is in the application of data assimilation technique in geosciences. He has been working on the development of advanced data assimilation techniques incorporating a flow dependent error tracking and for the assimilation of adaptive observations.  

Alberto also worked on fundamental aspects of the data assimilation theory in relation to other concepts of complex systems, in particular synchronizations. In the context of ensemble based data assimilation, he has been working on the problem of the design of the optimal ensemble in connection to the system instabilities and for the objective comparison among several state-of-the-art data assimilation algorithms. More recently he focused on the development of new strategies for the treatment of model error in data assimilation procedures.

About Mahaut de Vareilles

I completed a Master’s between CIMA, UAlg and GEOTOP, UQAM (Canada) with the following dissertation : «Organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts in recent sediments from the Guadiana river estuary, South-East Portugal» (applications in ecology and paleoclimate). My research line then changed and I did a PhD in Nutrition in Aquaculture, with the thesis title «Dietary nitrogen utilisation and protein expression in fish», between CCMAR, UAlg and HiB, UiB (Norway). My main research topics are fish physiology and protein metabolism, but also more generally, sustainability in Aquaculture.

Within the Bjerknes Centre, I currently do not perform any scientific research but work as a research project manager for the projects listed below. A part from the eye-opening experience of living the other side of scientific projects (administration vs research), the projects’ topics and their international and interdisciplinary aspects are the main motivation for me.

About Marion Devilliers

My PhD focused on particle dynamic modeling. I have some experience in hydrodynamic modeling (Ifremer, CEA in France), but my main interest is ocean and atmospheric circulation modeling and most recently, climate.

My post-doc at GFI with Noel Keenlyside is about Super-modeling : combining global climate model to achieve better predictions (ERC-STRECP project). I focus on the global model: EC-Earth (European model), which will be part, with MPI-ESM and Nor-ESM of the Supermodel.

My research is primarily focussed on Earth System Modelling, development of ocean general circulation models,analysing by means of observations and models naturally occurring variations to climate and human-induced climate change, analysis of inter-annual to decadal variability in the Atlantic-Arctic sector, and sea level variability and change.

I give climate presentations for the public, industry, governmental agencies, etc. on a (fairly) regular basis, and I spend some time on the public global warming debate.

About Ken Drinkwater

Research interests: Hydrographic variability of the North Atlantic; influence of NAO on marine ecosystems

Ken’s expertise is in physical oceanography, climate change, and the impact of physical forcing on marine ecosystems. He graduated with a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University and worked at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) located in Halifax, Canada.

At BIO he undertook research on the physical oceanography of coastal and shelf seas as well as investigating environmental effects on fish stocks. For 20 years he provided environmental reviews of the Northwest Atlantic for the North Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) and later for fisheries assessment groups in eastern Canada.

In 2003 he moved to the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway, where he is continuing his investigations into the effects of climate variability and change on marine ecosystems. He leads or is involved in several ESSAS related projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council including NESSAS, NORCAN, MENU and MENUII. He also heads the ESSAS lead IPY consortium Ecosystem Studies of Subarctic and Arctic Regions (ESSAR) and oversees the daily operations of the ESSAS Project Office located in Bergen.

My research is focused within the field of physical oceanography. Currently I am studying the Lofoten Basin and its vorticity dynamics. My main focus will be to study the current over the steep continental slope outside Lofoten. I will investigate the stability of the current,occuring eddy events and how lateral export of these eddies will interact with the Lofoten Basin and affect the stability and energy budget of the Lofoten Basin Eddy. My work will be based on idealized modelling and analyses of an already existing model.

About Yuanchao Fan

I am a terrestrial ecosystem ecologist and bioclimatologist interestedin ecosystem carbon dynamics and climate feedbacks. I study the biophysical and biogeochemical processes within vegetation, soil and atmosphere as well as the impacts of natural and human perturbations of the environment (e.g. permafrost thawing, drought, deforestation, agricultural expansion) at site to global scales. My current work mainly focuses on permafrost carbon-climate feedbacks and land surface modeling development (PERMANOR project). I also maintain collaborative research on the effects of tropical land use change on energy, water, carbon and nitrogen cycles from both historical and future perspectives (EFForTS project), using the CLM-Palm module I developed during my PhD. I take Earth system modeling, remote sensing, together with field observation as main research tools.

Prof. Furevik is the Director of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research

Etter at eg tok doktorgrad ved Universitetet i Bergen i 1998 har eg hovudsakeleg drive forsking basert på resultat frå klimamodellar, data frå satellittar og direkte målingar i hav og atmosfære. Eg er særleg interessert i forstå storstilte variasjonar i klimaet, både menneskeskapte og naturlege. Dette inkluderer samspelet mellom luft, hav og is, og studie av korleis klimavariasjonar ulike stader på kloden kan påverke kvarandre.

Som direktør på Bjerknessenteret for klimaforsking, leiar for ein nasjonal forskarskule i klima, og som medlem i ulike styre og utval, er eg gradvis blitt meir engasjert i forskingspolitisk og –administrativt arbeid. Eg likar å gje populærvitskapelege foredrag og gjennom det offentlege ordskiftet bidra til ei positiv utvikling av samfunnet.

Publikasjoner 

After my PhD defence at the University of Bergen in 1998, I have mainly been undertaking research based on results from climate models, data from satellites and direct measurements in the atmosphere and ocean. I am particularly interested in understanding the large-scale variations in climate, both manmade and natural. This includes the interaction between air, sea and ice, and studies of how climate variability in various parts of the globe can affect each other.

 

As director of the Bjerknes Centre for climate research, leader of a national research school in climate, and as a member of various boards and committees, I have gradually become more engaged in research politics and -administrative works. I enjoy giving popular science lectures and through public debates contribute to a positive development of the society.

About Maribel Garcia-Ibanez

I am biogeochemical oceanographer. My main research interests are the chemistry of the oceanic carbon cycle and the formation, transformation and circulation of water masses particularly in the North Atlantic.

My background includes participation in transatlantic oceanographic cruises and short stays at different research centers such as IFREMER (Brest, France), BIOS (St. George's, Bermuda), or the Geophysical Institute (Bergen, Norway).

Here, I am working as postdoc in the Biogeochemistry group of Uni Research Climate. I am part of two projects: STEMM-CCS (Strategies for Environmental Monitoring of Marine Carbon Capture and Storage) and BASIC (Boundary Layers in the Arctic Atmosphere, Seas and Ice Dynamics).

As part of the STEMM-CCS project I work in the development of new approaches for detection of any CO2 leakage from the offshore Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) sites. As part of the BASIC project I will be involved in data collection of CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) with an autonomous underway pCO2 system in air and the ocean around Svalbard.

About Lisa Griem

I am from Germany and I studied Geosciences (BSc.) and Marine Geosciences (MSc.) at the University of Kiel with a strong focus on paleoceanography, biogeochemistry and climate changes. During this time I worked as a research assistant at GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Science where I also wrote both of my theses within the Paleoceanography research group.

Within the frame of my Master’s thesis I investigated the influence of ocean acidification on the element incorporation into the skeleton of the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa measuring samples from seven different Norwegian reefs.

After I have been working at the University of Bergen as a research assistant since November 2015, I am now enthusiastic about my own PhD project within the Ice2Ice project in collaboration with the Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, the Geophysical Institute, Bergen and the Bjerknes Center. In August my PhD started with a research cruise from Reykjavik to SE Greenland where I got the chance to be part of collecting the sediment cores for my project. During the next three years I will try to find out more about changes in water mass properties which have a huge impact on the strength of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation during abrupt climate changes, known as Dansgaard-Oeschger events. Hereby I will focus on the mid-to late Marine Isotope Stage 3 using foraminifer assemblages, sortable silt, ice rafted debris and tephrachronology to constrain an independent age model for the developed high-resolution record.

My research focuses on the Faroe Bank Channel over flow, mainly using numerical approach supplemented by observations. I'm currently doing regional simulations with MITgcm, primarily looking into baroclinic instability and mess-scale variations of the overflow. I will later switch to climate modeling, aiming to develop some new parameterizations in more correctly representing the Nordic Sea overflows.

My research is focused on dynamic meteorology in midlatitudes, from synoptic to large scales. Currently, I am working on air-sea interactions and their effects on baroclinic development of midlatitude cyclones. To study these effects, I use both an analytical and a numerical model. Later on, I aim to include fronts, as well as investigate the moist baroclinic impacts in a fully coupled climate context.

About Anna Hughes

I am interested in ice sheets and glaciers, and their interaction with climate. I use traces left by the action of ice movement preserved in the landscape to reconstruct the past size, movement and dynamics of former ice masses.

My research focusses on the reconstruction of former ice sheets and has incorporated to date geomorphological mapping of glacial landforms across Britain, primarily using digital elevation models but also in the field, identification of glacial trimlines in south-east Greenland using multi-spectral satellite imagery, and 10Be exposure dating of glacially streamlined surfaces and erratic boulders in Greenland and Norway to determine ice-retreat rates.

Here in Bergen I am working to compile a comprehensive database of dates and glacial landforms that will be used to constrain the advance and retreat of the ice sheets that existed east of the North Atlantic during the last glacial cycle (DATED).

About Mehmet Ilicak

I am a Research Scientist at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, working with Dr. Mats Bentsen and Dr. Helge Drange. I got my PhD at Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) in the Meteorology & Physical Oceanography Department (MPO). 

I am interested in small scale mixing in the ocean and its representation in large scale climate models. My main focus areas include gravity currents, exchange flows and deep convection. I use climate models for developing parameterization, hypothesis testing, and high resolution numerical simulations for idealized process studies.

About Eystein Jansen

Palaeoclimatology - Main method: Marine proxies. Area/ Region: North Atlantic, Arctic, Southern Ocean. 

Professor Jansen was one of the founders of the Bjerknes Centre in 2000, and resigned as Director in 2014 after 13 years in the position. His research focuses on paleoclimate and natural climate change, and he was one of the lead authors of IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report.

Professor Jansen har vært med Bjerknessenteret siden det ble opprettet i 2000, og i 2014 gikk han av som direktør ved Bjerknessenteret etter 13 år. Han har særlig arbeidet med fortidsklima og de naturlige klimaendringene, og var hovedforfatter i begge de to siste rapportene til FNs Klimapanel (IPCC). 

Jansen er leder for den fjerde nordiske klimatilpasningskonferansens vitenskapelige komitee. Konferansen arrangeres i Bergen i august 2016.

About Fanny Ekblom Johansson

I am from Sweden and have mostly studied in Uppsala but also Stockholm and Innsbruck before my phd here in Bergen. My background is in physical geography and hydrology. The main theme of my research is climate variability across the North Atlantic Ocean, I will compare glacial and climatic variability patterns on both sides. I have three sub-projects: The first involve mapping the subglacial topography of the plateau glacier Sørfonna (Folgefonna) which will be used as input data for modelling the glacier. During my second project I will fingerprint the sediment input of the lake Sandvinvatnet (east of Sørfonna) by sediment core analysis and investigate the lakes glacial connection with Sørfonna and flooding occurring in the area. My third project is in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. I will investigate their two marine sediment cores collected west of the Greenland to reconstruct the outlet glacier Eqip Sermia. I am connected to two projects: MARGINS and TRANSENERGY.

Current work is on climate modelling over the tropical Atlantic with Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM). I am trying, in particular, to detect causes of sea surface temperature (SST) warm biases in the coupled model. Also, I am planning to investigate how the model’s climatological bias impact on the long-term variability.

ISOBAR project

 

My research interests lie within the field of polar boundary layer meteorology, in particular turbulent processes under stable conditions. My PhD project is linked to the NFR funded ISOBAR project (Innovative Strategies for Observations in the Arctic Atmospheric Boundary Layer). For this I make use of different measurement systems, including ground based in-situ, remote sensing and remotely piloted aircraft systems (UAS) to observe all relevant scales for the processes within the stable boundary layer. The overall goal of this research project is to improve parametrization schemes for the stable boundary layer based on our measurement strategies and observations.

Paleoclimate and ice sheet modelling. Mostly interested in the behaviour of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets over geological time scales. These can be caused by changes in insolation (solar irradiance) and greenhouse gas concentrations. For example: the melting of the Greenland ice sheet during the Last Interglacial (130.000-115.000 years ago) and the expansion of the Antarctic ice sheet during the Middle Miocene (about 14 million years ago). Latest research focuses on how the bedrock topography below the ice influences the ice sheet. This is funded through the Research Council of Norway, project called “IceBed”.

Doctoral degree in physical oceanography at the University of Bergen in 2011. Employed as a research scientist at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center since 2012. My research focus on the understanding of Subpolar Gyre dynamics, Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and water mass structure and transformation in climate models. I am particularly interested in those mechanisms that give rise to predictability on interannual-to-decadal time scales in the North Atlantic and the Nordic Seas. Main tool in my research is analysis and inter-comparison of global climate models (CMIP5 models).

I am interested in the feedback cycles of global climate change and ecosystem carbon cycles via changes in ecosystem structure. I have been working in two of the most highly vulnerable ecosystems to climate change, the arctic and the desert, as model systems to understand how climate driven changes in landscape structure such as soil properties and hydrology, influence ecosystem carbon balance. Currently, I am working on improving permafrost characteristics within the Community Land Model to improve the applicability of thawing permafrost and its influence on carbon cycling using climate models.

My principle research interests lie in the field of atmospheric modeling and observational techniques with focus on processes in the lower troposphere. I have previously worked on the evaluation of planetary boundary layer schemes embedded in the Weather Research and Forecasting Model WRF using observations from the unmanned aerial system SUMO. Recently, I have worked within the field of regional climate modeling, including dynamical downscaling of new CMIP5 GCM outputs, and on the evaluation of such downscaling products. My future research plans are to further develop my understanding of atmospheric processes on regional to local scale and to build upon my existing skills in regional modeling.

Physical oceanographer focusing on the polar regions. I currently work with in situ observations in the Arctic Ocean and a global earth system model (NorESM). My main research interest has been on historical oceanographic observations north of Svalbard, Atlantic Water circulation in the Arctic Ocean, and ice-ocean interaction. About Jan Even Øie Nilsen

Dr. Jan Even Øie Nilsen is a physical oceanographer whose research concerns climatic processes in the Atlantic, Nordic, and Arctic Seas, including sea level rise. He has been working as a research scientist at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) since May 2002. 

Nilsen is the project leader of BCCR's project on "NoRthern European and Arctic Sea lEvel" (iNcREASE). Earlier Nilsen was the project leader of the project "Changes in the past, present, and future sea level on the coast of Norway" funded by the City of Bergen (2009-2012), and the project leader for "Sea level change and ice sheet dynamics" (SEALEV) at the Centre for climate dynamics (SKD) at the Bjerknes Centre. Nilsen is currently participating in providing the official projections of 21st century sea level changes for Norway.

Nilsen is co-PI for the European Climate Research Alliance (ECRA) collaborative programme on sea level and climate change.

Nilsen received his dr.scient. degree in physical oceanography, on the Atlantic Water flow through the Norwegian Sea, from the Geophysical Institute (GFI), University of Bergen, in 2003.

I am currently involved in the SKD-RegScen project and the RECON project. In both of these, I am investigating the extreme winds in regional climate models using statistical analysis. In the RECON project, the work is focus on developing and assessing a methodology to incorporate future changes in extreme winds as projected by regional climate model into the planning stage for large-scale construction projects. As such, this project has focused on the Hardanger Bridge as a case study.
I am also involved in the study of multi-decadal variability in the Northern Hemisphere. This work has been done through the Bjerknes Compensation project, and partially through SKD-DynaWarm. In the Bjerknes Compensation project I established the existence of the Bjerknes Compensation mechanism in the Bergen Climate Model and identified the multi-decadal variability and spatial distribution of its impact. Through SKD-DynaWarm, I hope to identify this multi-decadal oscillation in paleo-climate data.
Separately from these ongoing projects, I also work on the study of Eurasian wintertime cooling and on the feedback mechanisms of the planetary boundary layer.

I am an atmospheric dynamicist with a keen interest in what the atmosphere does with the ocean. My current research focuses on excursions of polar, cold air masses over the comparatively warm waters of the Nordic Seas, so called cold air outbreaks. These bring about a wealth of adverse weather such as polar lows and Arctic fronts that are accompanied by gale force winds and heavy snowfall. Furthermore, they cause enormous losses of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere and they are important drivers behind the formation of cold, dense waters in the Nordic Seas. I am interested in where and why cold air outbreaks form, how they evolve once they feel the ocean, and what imprint they leave behind in the ocean.

Besides that I am interested in everything that flows or rotates on this planet and lives sufficiently close to the poles. In particular, I am / have been working on:

- maintenance of baroclinicity along storm tracks
- energetics of extratropical cyclones
- freshwater fluxes over the Southern Ocean
- role of synoptic weather events for Arctic sea ice variability

Pilskog arbeider med den biokjemiske komponenten til den norske jordsystemmodellen, NorESM. Han jobber med å innarbeide Newton-Krylov-metode for å oppnå likevekt for karbon og andre sporstoffer i havene.

Jordsystemmodeller, ofte kalt klimamodeller, er såkalte spinn-opp-modeller. Det vil si at vi ikke starter med en ferdig modell av klimaet, men modellen inneholder de fysiske og kjemiske formlene som beskriver hvordan de forskjellige sporstoffene transporteres og utvikler seg om systemet overlates til seg selv. Før vi kan utføre teoretiske eksperimenter som kan gi oss svar på hvordan fremtidens klima kan bli under forskjellige forutsetninger, er det viktig at modellen når en likevekt. Likevekt er oppnådd når sporstoffene får forutsigbare sykluser med en gitt periode. Tiden det tar å oppnå en slik likevektstilstand kalles for spinn-opp-tiden, og kan ta alt fra noen tiår til flere tusen år i simulerte år. Det avhenger av hvor hurtige prosessene som sporstoffene skal igjennom er. Omveltninger i atmosfæren og de øvre lagene av havet er relativt hurtige, men skal man inkludere de dype havene er vi i den andre enden av skalaen. Hvert simulert år bærer med seg en stor beregningskostnad.

Når vi forsker på forskjellige scenarier for klimaet er spinn-opp-tiden et nødvendig onde. Det er en beregningskostnad vi er nødt til å betale for å få troverdige resultater. Det er derfor en stor fordel om vi kan redusere denne kostnaden. Pilskog arbeider med å bruke avanserte matematiske metoder for gjøre dette. Tradisjonelt oppnås likevekt i modellene ved å tidsintegrere modellene frem til likevekt er oppnådd. Den delen av ORGANIC-prosjektet Pilskog arbeider med vil bruke matrisefrie Newton-Krylov-metoder for å tilnærme seg likevektstilstanden i havene. Ved å bruke slike tilnærminger håper vi at vi kan oppnå likevekt to til ti ganger hurtigere enn ved tradisjonell tidsintegrering. Dette kan høres lite ut, men for fullskala scenarier kan dette handle om dager med regnetid på de største datamaskinene i landet.

About Øyvind Paasche

Øyvind Paasche has a PhD in Earth Science from the University of Bergen (2004). He has been a guest researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH), and also at the Institute of Studying Planet Earth, University of Arizona. He is currently a Project Leader and a Senior Advisor for the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.

Paasche is experienced in national and international research politics, building networks and instigating new projects, administration and collaborations across different scientific disciplines. He is also an established scientist with over 15 years of national and international experience in geophysical and geological research within thematic areas such as climate change, environmental magnetism, glacier reconstructions, paleohydrology, floods, permafrost, geomorphology and weathering.

From 2011 to 2016 he lead the Bergen Marine Research Cluster, which is one of the largest marine science cluster in Europe. Paasche has had several positions with University of the Arctic including being Chair of Research (2011-2015). During 2012-2014, he was Chairman of the Board in Storby Marin, which he is still a member of. He is also currently a member of the Marine Resource group in Bergen Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 

Paasche has both been the Project Manager and Partner in several international research projects. He currently leads Ocean Outlook (2015-2018), AquaMare (2016-2018), Amalie Skram Monitoring Initative (2016-2017), and is also part of the organizing team promoting the international initiative called Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS). He has worked on several large EU-proposals and was a contributing author to the forth IPPC assessment (The Physical Science Basis) in 2007 as well as a secretary for chapter 6. Finally, Paasche has been a lecturer with the Advanced Climate Dynamic Courses (ACDC, 2010, 2012-2017), a renowned annually summer school organised by UIB, MIT, UW and WHOI.

My main interest is the use of coupled physical-biological models to study the interaction between physical ocean processes and the marine ecosystem on lower trophic levels.  Examples of such interactions are exchange between the coastal and open ocean ecosystem through cross-shelf transport, influence of climate variability on the timing and magnitude of the spring bloom, and how eddies and fronts influence the plankton distribution.  Models are useful for studying these problems because they provide understanding of the 3-dimentional dynamics involved. Currently I am working on the NFR-funded project AcuSat.  In this project acoustic measurements, satellite observations, and modeling studies are combined to get a better understanding of how eddies influence biological production in the ocean.  A high-resolution model is employed here to properly resolve the mesoscale dynamics.  In addition I am involved in the large European project MyOcean where we are implementing of an operational ocean forecasting system for the Arctic.

I am a physical oceanographer working mostly with observations from high-latitude regions. My current research focuses on the climate system in the Nordic Seas and especially the Iceland Sea, which is a source region for dense water masses that spill over the Greenland-Scotland Ridge and contribute to the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. In particular, I investigate the structure and dynamics of the circulation system of dense overflow waters in the Iceland Sea.

I am a senior researcher in the field of chemical oceanography, and my main research activities are connected to the coupled influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes on the marine carbon cycle, with special emphasis on carbon pumps and anthropogenic influences like ocean acidification. My primary tools for addressing these topics are time series data from fixed stations and measurements from voluntary observing ships (VOS), and from this I have gained  extensive experience in instrumentation for both discrete and autonomous measurements.

My research has primary been focussed on the open and coastal Nordic Seas, but I have also been involved in one of the Iron Fertilization Experiments in the Southern Ocean. Over the last decade the Red Sea marine carbon cycle has been on my agenda. I am PI for the biogeochemistry program at the fixed station Ocean Weather Station M (OWS M) in the Norwegian Sea, as well as PI for the VOS line G.O. Sars, which is one of the marine lines in the infrastructure project ICOS-Norway. Further, I am PI for the international ICOS network for Fixed Stations  in Europe and I'm also heavily involved in the station labelling process, quality control, and outreach activity performed by Ocean Thematic Centre (OTC) which is the marine central facility of ICOS. Over the years I have been involved in a variety of outreach activities, e.g. popular science courses for primary schools, research cruises for high school students, and oral and written media contribution.

About Lars Henrik Smedsrud

Smedsrud has a wide experience in polar oceanography.
He is now a professor II at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), and help coordinating the research group on atmosphere, cryosphere, ocean processes at the Bjerknes Centre.

Smedsrud accomplised his PhD in 2000 on frazil ice formation and sediment entrainment in polar waters, and has worked with projects related to sea ice formation in the Arctic and melting of ice-shelves in Antarctica since then. Smedsrud has extensive field experience, has been cruise leader during the International Polar Year, participated in several international laboratory experiments, and worked with a number of numerical models. Modelling activity includes vertical column modelling of the Arctic Ocean and sea ice cover, sub ice shelf circulation under the Fimbul Ice Shelf in Antarctica, polynya dynamics on Svalbard, and melting and export of sea ice in Global Earth System Models.

Currently my research focuses on improving our knowledge of present and future climate, climate change and climate variability at local to regional scales. In particular, I focus on understanding the physical mechanisms driving meteorological and hydrological responses to both internal and external forcings and evaluate the impacts these responses may have on human and natural systems. I am a meteorologist focusing on the combination of theory, observations, and modelling. I have specialized on a variety of scales ranging from meso, synoptic, to large-scale flow and participated in several field campaigns addressing meso-scale atmospheric flow and atmosphere-ocean interactions. Since 2015, I am the director of the NFR funded Norwegian Research School on Changing Climates in the Coupled Earth System (CHESS). I was coordinator and head of the field campaign ALLGEX and part of the organizational team of FLOHOF. My specific research interests are devoted to interaction processes between different space and time scales, addressing wave mean flow interactions and the dynamical impact of smaller scale processes. I am currently leading research focusing on high impact weather in the Arctic, e.g., Polar lows and topographically initiated wind events with an increasing interest on atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions. In 2012 I was elected as a member of the International Commission for Dynamic Meteorology and lead the organization of an international workshop on atmosphere-ocean-ice interaction, which was held in Norway in 2015. I was awarded the prize for best lecturer of the academic year 2012/2013 at the Faculty for Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bergen and nominated for the IAMAS early career scientist medal in 2013. My PhD research is about the monsoon in Bangladesh. More specifically,  I look at how the people in Bangladesh perceive the monsoon onset, and   how science defines it. Should science adapt to the people’s  perceptions or vice versa?

It turns out that heavy early season rainfall in northeast Bangladesh

causes the discrepancies we see between perception and science. I look at the mechanisms that cause this rainfall using model and reanalysis data. We have also developed a statistical technique to compare scientific monsoon definitions to the perceptions of the people. We use this technique to indicate which definition may be best suited to decision making applications.

 

I also work with science communication and started ClimateSnack.com in 2012. ClimateSnack is an international community where young and early career climate scientists work together to improve their writing and communication skills.

About Jerry Tjiputra

My research focuses on applying Earth system models, complemented withobservational evidence, to study how the ocean carbon cycle and ecosystem respond to various climate change from interannual up to centennial timescales. In particular, I am interested in the physical and biogeochemical mechanisms governing the variation of ocean carbon sources and sinks from the near-past and into the future and how they interact with and feedback to the climate. Recently, I have also used the model to study impact of the global carbon cycle to natural and anthropogenic external forcing in the climate system, such as volcanic eruption and idealized climate engineering.

Together with the biogeochemistry group in Uni, we apply an integrated (modeling and analytical) approach to get the full picture of terrestrial and ocean carbon cycle role in regulating the climate. We contribute to the Global Carbon Project and better understanding of climate change impact on high latitude permafrost system, marine ecosystem and ocean acidification. The group also plays a key contributing role in developing and maintaining the carbon cycle components of the Norwegian Earth system model (NorESM).

I am a meteorologist and my research interests vary from synoptic to large-scale atmospheric flow. However, I am most interested in the Dynamics of mid-latitude Cyclones, Fronts and Weather Systems. Currently, I work on atmosphere-ocean interactions in the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio regions by using idealized simulations, reanalysis data, fully coupled climate models and novel diagnostic tools.

Marco van Hulten studied physics.  He received a MSc degree in History and Philosophy of Science.  Then he did a PhD in oceanography.  His expertise is the modelling of trace elements and particles in the ocean. He has been at the Institute since 2010, working to increase scientific understanding of how warm Atlantic surface waters flow into Nordic seas, are transformed into cold deep water, and circulate southward. Research interests:

My main expertise is in applied mathematics, modelling water wave propagation in the presence of floating bodies (like ice sheets, for example). I have other interests in elasticity, wave propagation in random media, and mathematical techniques such as the Wiener-Hopf and residue calculus techniques. I am currently working on including the interactions between waves and sea ice in the MIZ (marginal ice zone) in a nested configuration of HYCOM (HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model, nested inside an outer TOPAZ model) that has been set up in the Fram Strait.
