Abstract:

We have compiled a new global total sediment thickness map of the world's oceans and marginal seas. We use this grid to analyze the distribution of sediments with respect to the age of the underlying oceanic lithosphere and its latitude. The distribution of sediments may provide information on paleoclimate. In addition, we derive formulas for calculating sediment thickness as a function of lithospheric age and latitude, which improves global and regional paleobathymetric reconstructions.
