New projects at the Bjerknes Centre

Bjørg Risebrobakken and Petra Langebroek are two of the researchers at the Bjerknes Centre who recently have gained funding for new research projects.

Body

The Research Council of Norway (RCN) has recently finalized the review process of the FRINATEK Call (funding for Independent Projects in Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology) with deadline 30 May.

The number of proposals submitted within the deadline was 271. A total of 19 researcher projects and 9 personal postdoc research fellowships will receive funding.

New projects

We are very proud of the fact that two of the proposals are affiliated to the Bjerknes Centre.

Bjørg Risebrobakken (Researcher project): Ocean Controls on high latitude sensitivity – a Pliocene case study. Partners are UiB, Durham University and LSCE, France.

Petra Langebroek (Personal post-doctoral research fellowship): Quantifying ice sheet response to variations in initial bedrock topography (IceBed).

We would also like to congratulate John Birks with his new project “No-analogue climates and ecological responses in the past and future (NoAClim)”.

The project is a collaboration between UiB, Uni Research and the University of Bristol. The proposal was submitted to the RCN – NORKLIMA Ecosystem Call (deadline 5 September). The Programme received 46 proposals. 8 of them will be funded.

Bilateral project

RCN (Programme MILJØ2015) decided some weeks ago to finance a new bilateral project between Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dehli and the Bjerknes Centre (Uni Research): “Water related effects of changes in glacier mass balance and river runoff in western
Himalaya, India: past, present and future (GLACINDIA)”.

Atle Nesje is PI, and the project is a collaboration between Uni Research, UiB, UiO, NCAR and the German Climate Service Centre. The project is expected to start 1 May 2013.

New call

In February, we can expect the results from the POLPROG call from the RCN (deadline 17 October). The proposals affiliated to the Bjerknes Centre are:
1. Variability, thresholds and predictability of the Barents earth system (BarCODE). Coordinator: IMR (Randi Ingvaldsen). Other partners from the Bjerknes Centre are UiB, NERSC and Uni Research.

2. Svalbard ice in a warm climate (SWARM). Coordinator: UiB (Kerim Nisancioglu). Other partners from the Bjerknes Centre: Uni Research.

3. Impacts of polar sea ice on climate, weather extremes and society (IMPLICES). Coordinator: UiB (Noel Keenlyside). Other partners from the Bjerknes Centre: NERSC and Uni Research

4. Svalbard integrated project atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions. Observations, process understanding and modeling (SVIP).
Coordinator: UiB (Thomas Spengler). Other partners from the Bjerknes Centre: Uni Research.
